If a color indicator is added to silica gel the color change of the silica gel shows how much water has been adsorbed by the silica gel. Thus for example, in case of a silica gel with orange indicator the color changes from orange to green with increasing water uptake. Therefore it can be easily identified whether the silica gel has reached its maximum adsorption capacity (dark green) and must be replaced or if possible regenerated.

Silcarbon silica gels do not contain cobalt and are therefore not precancerous.
