Granular Carbons
Granular activated carbons with fine and medium particle sizes are mainly applied in water treatment processes. Granular carbons of high quality have a long lifetime. This corresponds to activated carbons with:
• high density,
• high activity.
For adsorbing large molecules like e.g. organic colours our highly activated coal based carbons or chemically activated wood based carbons are being used as the benchmarks in the food industry.
Additional low ash and low moisture content ensure that the activated carbon really consists of effective carbonaceous material.
Silcarbon activated carbons have these properties. A typical analysis for our granular carbon Silcarbon K835 is e.g.
apparent density: 500 g/l
ash content: 3%
moisture: 5%
iodine number: 1.050 mg/g
The iodine number corresponds with the activity (i.e. the internal surface area) of the carbon.
A carbon with a high iodine number can adsorb a higher amount of pollutants than one with a low iodine number. Activated carbons with high iodine numbers have the advantiage of a prolonged life time.
Activated carbons, made form coconut shells, can be produced with high activity without becoming brittle or soft. Silcarbon activated carbons with iodine numbers of at least 1000 or 1200 mg/g are one of our standard products.
Another important adsorption parameter is the methylene blue adsorption capacity or methylene blue number. Our granular coconut carbons are specially activated so both iodine and methylene blue numbers are exceptionally high. Sometimes applications require an activated carbon type with lower iodine number, but high methylene blue number; this requirement can be met with our coal based carbons that excel in well defined pore structures for best adsorption results with difficult adsorbable substances.
